In the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, a shooting had killed 49 people and injured 86 people. “This is one of New Zealand’s darkest days”, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had said. As of 17:47 NZDT (04:47 UTC, 00:47 EDT) a lockdown of schools was lifted, according to authorities. NZ Police Commissioner Mike Bush said that there were explosives attached to vehicles. The first shooting took place at the Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch. The gunman using the name of “Brenton Tarrant” streamed himself doing the shooting on Facebook using a camera that can be head mounted. The footage had caught the shooting which he was shooting at men, women, and children inside the mosque. It started at 13:40 NZDT (00:40 UTC, 20:40 EDT). The second attack took place at another mosque 5 km (3 mi) away, the Linwood Mosque. Christchurch police officers responded to reports of shots fired at 13:40 NZDT (00:40 UTC, 20:40 EDT). By 14:11 NZDT (01:11 UTC, 21:11 EDT), local schools would go into lockdown a few minutes later. At 14:30 NZDT (01:30 UTC, 21:30 EDT) the police had confirmed that the situation involved a gunman. Witnesses had told media that people were “running for their lives” and they saw bleeding people on the ground.
