Well, I have to admit something kind of embarrassing. My husband and I were in Egypt from the middle of October until the 5th of November, and it took a long time for me to catch on to the fact that there are two Fayrouzs in Egypt. One is the name of a brand of soda pop that has flavors like pear, and one is a singer, the woman you have asked about. We would be driving along, and she’d come on the radio, and the driver would tell me it was Fayrouz, and I would think to myself (since I don’t speak Arabic) that someone had gone to an awful lot of trouble just to make a commerical for a soda pop.
Once I got the message that she was a singer, stuff started to make sense. My father’s staff, including his drivers, are all Muslim, but they would tell me about this wonderful woman who was Christian, but who learned to sing Qur’an, as well as Christian songs of faith. My impression of her was that she has a really beautiful, full and rich voice. I was also happy to note that she has embraced her culture completely, singing both songs of her own faith, and songs of Islam. To my mind, that makes her a truly Arabic woman and singer, because she sings to all people, not just a small group. Naturally, she also sings a lot of song which are not religious. I know someone over there told me she has actually sung some of the works of Khalil Gibran, who is one of my favorite poets.
There were also a lot of pop music female singers on the radio while we were there, and I was struck by the fact that singing in a foreign language cannot mask a lack of talent and skill. The Middle Eastern world has its own share of Britney Spears and Madonnas, only they dress a bit more conservatively than the ones we have here in the US. Alas, they are still rotten singers 
Thanks for sharing those videos. They were a treat to watch. She really is an extraordinary woman, and I am glad I finally caught on to the fact that all those songs weren’t about soda pop.
