Is this gift okay for a Hindu wedding…?
my friend’s having a traditional hindu wedding in india, then they’re coming back for an “american” reception.
i know money’s a good gift, but i want to dress it up a little bit. today i found a really colorful, beautiful (& cheap!) ganesh statue that i thought would look good attached to an envelope w/ a check in it… Do you think this would be an appropriate gift?
the reason i ask is that i’m christian, not hindu. so the only thing i can compare it to is if someone gave me an artistic crucifix or jesus statue, which would be fine for a christian wedding…
so is giving a statue of a hindu god considered weird? or would they be able to display it in their house?
i just like having something to wrap other than just handing over money. i’m weird like that.
That’s very thoughtful of you. I’ve always found it impersonal if someone was to give another just money and nothing else. It’s always seemed like they had no time to think about their friend’s special event, so they would just stick a few bucks in an envelope and call it a day. But adding a little side gift is quite reflective as a friend on your part, and I applaud you for such habit.
As for your question, it really depends on how Hindu she is. If she’s extremely devout, then the statue may make a cool gift. Or, if you’re hoping that the figurine will end up on display in her home, you might want to recall what she normally puts up around the house. If it fits in with its potential surroundings, then go for it.
I’m not Hindu, so I wouldn’t really know the correct etiquette of gifting. But I hope this helps. Good Luck!
