Looking to make homemade wooden fishing lures?
I have some wood carves ready, but need paint and dont know what kind to use. Then i have to put a clear water proof on and dont know what to use either. Any ideas
Hey Steve,
Painting is the trickiest part – but also the most fun. The best advice I can give is don’t rush it, no matter how anxious you are to start fishing with your lures. Getting a really good finish takes time.
Start by putting a really good undercoat on. I like to use a white enamel for this because it drys to a really hard and durable base, and I thin it down a little and dip the lure in a couple of times. Hang the lure to dry and blot the excess off with paper towel occassionally. I let the enamel dry for at least a week before I paint the top coats. If you don’t do this, you run the risk of the solvent from the enamel reacting with the topcoats and causing a horrible mess. It’s not such a problem if you use enamel top coats though.
When I first started making wooden lures I used automotive touch-up paints, which are great and come in a lot of colors, including some nice pearls and metallics. Being a spray can, you can spray them through frisket or a stencil.
These days I am a little more advanced and tend to use an airbrush, which takes some getting used to, but does a better job becaise you can really control the flow of paint. I use createx or autoair paints, and spray a coat of clear polyurethane between each colour.
You could finish with a two pack like Devcon, but I prefer to spray a couple of coats of polyurethane, which is easier to use, cheaper and looks better. Devcon probably gives a tougher and more durable finish though.
