How should we judge a religion?

I was told in all caps by an Islamic supporter that we should not judge Islam by the way Muslims act, but solely on what the Quran says. Considering, I do not agree with what the Quran says, this did not help his case any. In fact, it made his case worse because the Quran supports violent extremism and terrorism. It is the people who are claiming they are peaceful.

Regardless, it poses a good question: how should we judge religions?
by the actions of its followers?
by its texts alone?
or both?

All truth is revealed through action.

You make a great point about Islam, anyway you chose to look at it, the result isnt good.

Almost all armed conflict worldwide is Islamic. Just a coincidence? Well, Islam has always been at war and once dominated much of the world. In fact the greatest genocides in human history were Islamic, for real, no exagerration (See Arab Muslim Invasions of India, Armenian Holocaust, Bangeldesh Holocaust, etc).

If we look at the Quran, we see something which is much more violent than the bible and written in present tense “commandment” language (see below).
